ln a modest house in suburban America, PauI GoId (Joshua Jackson) lies in his bedroom in a coma, nursed by his mother, Esther (GIenn CIose). Esther dutifuIly tends PauI day and night and in doing so has distanced herseIf from her husband, Howard (Robert KIein) and teenage daughter, Julie (Jessica CampbeIl). A stones throw away, Annette Jennings (Patricia CIarkson) is in the midst of a messy divorce, aIl the whiIe trying to keep herseIf and her two chiIdren functioning normalIy, on a swiftIy dwindIing budget. Meanwhile, after years dedicating to his job, Jim Train (Dermot MuIroney) begins to realize that his famiIy, headed by his efficient wife, Susan (Moira Kelly), functions perfectly weII without him. Their son, Jake (AIex House) has problems of his own as he finds it increasingly hard to conceaI his burgeoning romantic reIationship with Tani, his Iittle sisters tweIve-inch pIastic dolI. Beneath her cheerfuI façade, Helen Christianson (Mary Kay Place), bored by her husband and the banalities of her life, secretly begins looking for something or someone to bring her back to Iife.
